Gahanna Residents in Need (GRIN)

GRIN serves the Gahanna community, providing food, clothing, & emergency assistance all year... not just during the holidays. It was announced during the 10/11 services at Mifflin Presbyterian Church that there has been an increase in requests for assistance from GRIN of 30% over last year. GRIN is not affiliated with Mifflin or the Presbyterian Church. Mifflin simply donates office services. Please consider donating food or sending a check to GRIN, c/o Mifflin Presbyterian Church, 123 Granville ST, Gahanna, OH 43230.

Feb. 09 Meeting with Mayor Stinchcomb

The Feb. 24 '09 meeting included a very informative discussion with Mayor of Gahanna, Becky Stinchcomb. The mayor and her assistant administrator, Brandi Braun, began the evening with a power point presentation of the city's current financial situation and results of the community survey of '08. Several of our members asked questions and we got details on upcoming road, school and other building projects. To see the pictures taken by member Al Siegel click on the link below.

Day of Service Jan. 19th and beyond

folks,

we don't have an event planned for the GP group for the national day of service Pres. Obama suggested for Jan. 19th. [which is also MLKjr day, so many folks have it off work]

but one of our progressive friends in the Licking County group, Grace Cherrington, provided some information that each of us can use on the 19th or other days to extend our support for our community at large. below is her info.
The usaservice.org site lists activities that will take place in our area on the 19th. you can pick from one of them if you'd like or decide on something of your own. One of our members mentioned she'd like to get her daughter into helping at a senior home. There are lots of options and one or more is bound to fit your schedule.

If you want to share what project you helped with on the 19th, go to our website, create a blog and tell everyone about it.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I usually spend time sorting out after the holidays. I usually have stuff that does not quite meet thrift store qualifications.

The Waste Not Center accepts a lot of the stuff which you would not send to the thrift store.

This place fits in well with Obama's Renew America Together Service Program http://www.usaservice.org/content/home/

This gives you a good reason to meet the folks in your neighborhood/precinct/ward. I'll be taking a truck load over end of January.

Hours: Open from 2 to 6 p.m. every Thursday and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. the second Saturday of each month

Senator Sherrod Brown Unveils Comprehensive Green Energy Bill

In it’s current form, the $36 billion (over 5 years) bill expand green energy research and development, promote the commercialization of emerging energy technologies, enhance training opportunities to equip workers for 21st century energy jobs, and help build a green energy manufacturing base. Compare that to the $18 billion EACH YEAR the current administration gives to energy companies now.

This is an energy bill. This is a jobs bill. This is an environment bill,” Brown said. “Ohio is already a major force in the alternative energy market. We have the innovators, the manufacturers, and the highly skilled workforce. By investing in green technologies, this legislation would empower Ohio to become the Silicon Valley of alternative energy.”

Way to go, Senator Brown!

Happy National Arbor Day! (April 25th)

Sometimes I think Trees get over looked in environmental talks. We keep looking for the next technological solution to help us conserve energy and clean our air, but let's not forget Trees! One average mature tree can absorb approximately 50 lbs of carbon dioxide per year. (And, not to mention all the oxygen it releases!) Trees also can prevent erosion, clean water, and remove dust and other particles from the air. They are an amazing feat of evolutionary engineering! And, don't forget, the City of Gahanna is a member of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA community thanks to the efforts of our Mayor and Parks & Recreation Department!

The Nature Conservancy has initiated "plant a billion trees" program. For every one dollar donated, one tree will be planted.
